Dutch Oven Cooking

Ok I have some catch-up to do with the whole blog thing. I'm waiting for my friend Deann to get pack from Lake Powell so that I can post the cute pic's she has from girls camp. Anyway, 2 weeks ago I was asked by Morgan in my ward to teach dutch oven cooking for our enrichment night. Of corse I said yes, but she said that it couldn't be any kind it had to be creative and something no one would think of doing. Of course I still say yes. So to the web sites, boarders books, and my own cookbook I go. I decided on doing lazana, something no one would think of. So I decided to try to figure it out the Sunday before. I wanted to make sure I did it as self reliant as I could, which means I made my own noodles. This is very fun and not that hard. So away I went, it took about 15 min of prep and it cooked for 30 min. Ahh, I'm in love but I hated the sauce. So on Tuesday I decided to do it again this time with no cook noodles and Marie Calenders cheep sauce which was on sale 2 for $4.00. Wow it was amazing, I also made a cherry chip cake cobbler and french bread. The cake was good but not the wow I wanted and the bread was amazing, and yes all cooked in a dutch oven. I also found some time to fold laundry while it was cooking. I was so efficient that I didn't notice the small grass fire I had set due to the high winds that day. Bob of course noticed and mentioned that it was a great way of getting out of weed whacking. We only charred part of the backyard and no one new the wiser.

So on Thursday night I show up 15 min early, light my coals and pull the whole thing off without a single problem. I also made cherry chocolate cake with cream cheese filling, super yummy! Everyone loved it and we all had an amazing time. Chris Mitchell loved it so much he made me make it for our families when we were in Sierriaville camping/setting-up for girls camp. My family is very tired of lazana. I also had the chance to teach the 2nd year girls how to make mountain woman breakfast and muffins/biscuits my favorite. Actually they are all my favorites, I could eat dutch oven anytime anywhere.

Thanks for the amazing mom comment. So with that you get a star for the day. Actually I'll give you the recipie, its super easy.

1 box no cook lasagna noodles
2 jars marinia sause (I perfer the cheap kind - it has fewer tomatoes which cuts down the acid content).
1 small tub cottage cheese
1 pk cream cheese
1 egg
1 lrg pk mozzeralla
1 lb hambuger
1/4 lb sasuage
1 onion
2 cloves garlic
1 bag charcole

Heat up about 30 coals until there grey
Brown meat, garlic, and onion (this can be done in dutch oven). Mix together cottage cheese, cream cheese, and egg in seprate bowl.

Then all you do is layer:
1st layer is meat and sause, then noodles (remember no boil noodles),then meat, then cheese mixture, then mozzeralla, then sause, 2nd layer the same as 1st, 3rd layer noodles, sause, and mozzerlla.

Cook with about 15 coal on the bottom and 17 or so on the top, takes about 30 min - I do it in a 14" dutch oven. If yours is smaller most likely you will have to use less coals and more time.

I also make mom's garlic bread, double foil it and just put it on top of the coals of that are on the dutch oven. Make sure you fip it everyso often so it doesn't burn the bread.

Sorry for the misspelled words there is no spell check and I'm to lazy to look them up. (Just got back from seeing Harry Potter Movie)

Hope this helps any questions just call.

Yum! As soon as the burn ban is lifted, we'll have to try that. Might be next year, we're in such a terrible drought.
